Package note: This analysis is built from CNN’s published transcript of the “CNN & Jubilee Town Hall with James Talarico,” aired October 14, 2026, 8–9:30 p.m. ET from Fort Worth. CNN labels it a rush transcript that “may not be in its final form.” It records statements made by a candidate and a voter; it is not a government record and settles no theological question.

During the town hall’s “table for two” segment, Jodi Hunt of Burleson, introduced by CNN as a farmer and professor and describing herself as an orthodox Catholic and theologian, challenged Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico on abortion. She asked how she could trust him “that you would protect the most innocent among us.” Talarico said they could find common ground on reducing unplanned pregnancies and abortions, and said “the Bible is silent on the issue of abortion.” Hunt replied that “the bible is not silent on abortion. There is the Ten Commandments. Thou shalt not kill.”
Core Tension
The exchange turned on two different questions. Hunt argued a moral and theological one: that life begins at conception and scripture forbids taking it. Talarico conceded they reach “different moral conclusions” and tried to move to a policy one, calling abortion “a public policy problem” and saying both want “fewer abortions.” His statement that the Bible is “silent” means it contains no explicit passage on abortion; Hunt’s reply rests on applying the commandment against killing to the unborn. The transcript shows Talarico did not dispute her reading directly: he said that if he believed abortion “was murder, that it violated the Ten Commandments, then I wouldn’t support it.”
