Package note: This analysis covers an October 16, 2026, International Trade Administration (Commerce Department) press release. The figures are ITA’s own totals of investment SelectUSA says it “helped secure.” They include announced and planned projects and are not audited capital spending.

Primary sources

  • International Trade Administration, “Trump Administration Brings in $280B in SelectUSA Investment – More Than All Previous Program Years Combined” (October 16, 2026): https://www.trade.gov/press-release/trump-administration-brings-280b-selectusa-investment-more-all-previous-program-years

ITA says SelectUSA, its foreign-investment promotion office, has “helped secure more than $280 billion in foreign direct investment” during the Trump administration. That compares with $255 billion across all prior program years since 2011, and with $68 billion in the same period of the Biden administration. ITA cites more than 345 projects expected to support about 55,000 jobs.

Core Tension

These are investments SelectUSA “helped secure,” not all foreign investment in the United States, and ITA does not define how it credits a project to the program. The total counts commitments, including “new and planned” pledges such as the $56 billion from the 2026 summit. It does not count money actually spent. Job figures are “expected.” ITA does not list the projects, so the $280 billion cannot be checked against the companies’ own announcements. Commerce’s broader statistics on foreign direct investment, published separately, are the independent measure.
