Package note: This analysis checks an October 15, 2026, White House release against the Council of Economic Advisers report it cites, “The Real Cost of Socialism in America” (October 2026), Chapter 2, “Open Borders and Mass Amnesty.” The CEA figures are projections by the administration’s economists.

Primary sources

  • Council of Economic Advisers, “The Real Cost of Socialism in America,” Chapter 2 (October 2026): https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/The-Real-Cost-of-Socialism-In-America-Report.pdf

The release lists CEA estimates of what amnesty and open-border policies, attributed to the Democratic Socialists of America, would cost. It then says: “Over ten years, the full suite of DSA immigration policies would cost taxpayers $49 TRILLION.”

Core Tension

That sentence misstates the report. CEA’s Chapter 2 says: “Over ten years, the full suite of DSA immigration policies could cost taxpayers between $440 and $613 billion.” That is about 1% of $49 trillion. The $49 trillion is CEA’s total for all eight DSA pillars, and Medicare for All alone accounts for $47.41 trillion of it. The other immigration figures in the release generally match the report. The release also blurs the difference between “Democrats” and the DSA platform that CEA actually scored.
